Mattel has been hurting close to 15+yrs, not just from 2009 as many other companies have come and gone which made a huge impact on their yearly sales which is not noted... Johnny Lightning, Racing Champions, Jada, Muscle Machines, Ertl, Revell, Maisto and so on have crippled Mattels sales throughout the years when they came out in the diecast business.... Now Mattel has to compete with Castline M2 and Auto World these days as they are making a huge dent in their yearly sales, plus many of the other diecast companies that were around are not running as strong as they once were from the day when diecast was everyones pastime...
I know I do not support Mattel as I used too in the past as I have changed my ways in how I collect these days.... I would be lucky if I add 20 Hot Wheels Cars to my collection per year....

It's hard to say if Mattel is really 'hurting'. Not making profit projections just means they aren't raking in the money they would like to, or that their statisticians and bean counters predicted they would.
But if it keeps up, like any huge company, they will respond with cutbacks/layoffs. And it probably won't come out of the CEO's paycheck.
