Just a few wood working projects I've done in the past 96 car display cases This is a 1/43 display cabinet. I found the plans on the web labeled $15 display case. Start Finished Full My wife saw this closet organizer in one of my wood working mags and wanted one. So I made it. Before After - PS It was a pain in the butt to make This table I found at Goodwill for $25. I refinished it used it for a couple years then sold it for $200. Just another one of my hobbies

Your next project is a new scratching post for the cats... LMAO Oh you laugh.....I made the one in the pic. Just needs new rope. My wife came home from work one day and showed me one she found online and wanted to buy. At $125 I told her I could build it for less. $60 and some elbow grease later we had a 6' tall 3' wide cat tower with 4 levels and 8 scratching posts that looked the same as the one she wanted to buy.

Nice, I like them all. Is that acrylic or glass you used for the front of the display cases? And how did you fasten it? Curious minds want to know. I love seeing other's work. I consider myself an amateur but have done a little of my own. This is a display case I built. I also did the paneling on the walls and the bookshelves. Still not quite finished - some of the trim still needs to be added/finished as well as the ceiling. I also built these shelves to fit in our stairway. One of the reasons for the glass/acrylic question is because these are acrylic panels I put on the front of two of the sections, but I need to find a better/easier way to attach and/or remove them (as you can probably tell, I also still need to finish the wiring for the lighting).

Hey D The first pic is missing.
The large cases do not have a front. I was going to put acrylic on them, but found it would be to expensive. The smaller 1/43 case has acrylic attached with screws.

Thanks, think I have fixed the picture.
Yes, that was the other issue with the acrylic - it is VERY expensive - and really not that good for the purpose either. I also used screws to fasten the acrylic but it is a pain every time you want to get in and out of the case. I put inserts into the wood for the screws to go into so I could remove and replace the screws without affecting the wood around it but it is still a pain - I at least recognized the fact that I would want to get in and out when designing the thing but not how it would be affected by the material used. Glass would have been much better but the mounting would have been more difficult - to begin with - but much easier in the long run. If I had to do it again I would not go the acrylic route.

Duncan, I do not know much about woodworking, but what if you would make a channel to slide the acrylic / glass in and out... IDK just a suggestion

You have some skills Steve! I love your work. Maybe thats what I need to do, is to make my own display cases instead of paying alot for Carney cases. Only thing is even though I have an interest in woodwork and maybe metalwork, I just don't know how to do any of it.

LMAO It's called bad timing - if I hadn't chosen that moment to take the picture and lit up the stairs with the flash those two cars just might have made it. :) I thought about a track of some sort, Shell, but I would have either had to take apart the front of the shelves already there and probably, or at least risk, damage to the wood or tacked on something to the outside that I wasn't sure I could/would trust for support so went with the screws. What I would really like to do one of these days is have glass doors made that I can mount with hinges and then devise some way to seal the edges to keep the dust out. Some day maybe . . . .

Duncan, maybe when you create another display you can experiment with making a track to fit the glass in. You know like those ones they have for baseballs and stuff, of course yours would be a little more elaborate but I think in the long run you would be very happy with it. My ollies has those display cases all the time for the 1:24 scale cars, baseballs, dolls, flags, etc. I picked up a few for Dan a few years back fairly cheap, if memory serves me correctly they were around $8 or $9 a piece now they raised the price of them to $14 or $15, I will have to check again when I go back there. But all and all Duncan I think you did a great job. Keep up the good job guys I really enjoyed the pictures... I can show you the pictures of my creativity but I don't think you want to see a fluffy bunny I made for my daughter... LOL

Thumbs upThanks Shell!, btw, fluffy rabbits are fine. My granddaughters would love them (as of Saturday morning I went from three granddaughters to five, btw)
Squimb - Question on your construction - I am assuming somehow you have to 'groove' cut 'slats' into the boards used for shelves and then fit them together to make it all go together and hold the cars. How did you do that with any accuracy? I can't seem to do it in such a way that I would even trust putting something on them for display.

Wow Duncan, Congrats on two more granddaughters. IDK how you do it I can barely handle my only Daughter who is 13 going to be 14 in July. She is a handful. I love to create different things, but my husband wont let me handle power tools he says if I use a power tool he would be scared. I have no clue why it isn't like I would go around cutting people up like in the Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Crazy
LMAO

It's a bit tough to explain how I did it, but here it goes. After cutting the slats to the length and width I wanted, I put two blades together on the table saw which made a cut the same as the thickness or the slates. I used blue painters tape to hold them together, this insured all the cuts to be identical. I marked off where I wanted the cuts, raised the blade just over half the height of the slates and slowly pushed them through. I had to do 7 cuts on the horizontal and 11 cuts on the vertical. Then I un-taped them and put them together. If I decide to make any more in the future I will be sure to do step by step pics.
